This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace. It is strung with 14 beautiful large beads hand carved by the artist using very high grade turquoise from the Carico Lake mine in Nevada. The beads were cut into a free form thin slab shape. You can do this with Carico Lake stone because it is so hard and avoids breakage. It allows you to create these elegant thin beads.Carico Lake Turquoise is some of the hardest turquoise ever mined and because of that it will take a very hard polish. These beads have a brilliant polish that is just stunning. The turquoise was formed at the site of a lake, hence the name, that dried up. It is very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, so never easily mined. This makes the turquoise scarce and valuable.
You are lucky to get a ring, or pendant, cuff, or earrings from this stone. An entire necklace wit 14 stones is rare...
The necklace is strung on it's original flexible cord... Nice drape and very secure...I would estimate the necklace to be approximately 30 to 40 years old with little use and careful storage. The turquoise has a saturated bright teal blue color that shades from light to medium dark with the characteristic light brown scattered matrix seen in Carico Lake stone. Another quality is the bird's eye pattern to the coloration where the areas of dark color are surrounded by islands of lighter color, producing a "bird's eye" effect.
The light brown matrix shades to dark tobacco brown on some of the stones and is intricately webbed. These are really stunning examples of Carico Lake slab shaped beads. The shell heishi compliments the organic nature of the turquoise beautifully in shades of creamy white and dark brown. The wearing length is approximately 27 inches. The beads graduate in size with the largest measuring 1.25 inches in width and an impressive 2 inches in length. The smallest bead measures 7/8th inches in width and is 1.25 inches long. The necklace weighs 100 grams. That's an impressive amount of very valuable Carico Lake Turquoise. This item is in the category "Jewelry & Watches\Ethnic, Regional & Tribal\Necklaces & Pendants".
