This is a listing for a vintage Navajo necklace, mid-century in age , mint condition with no broken or missing beads and it's original cotton stringing. The turquoise is high grade webbed stone from the Carico Lake mine in Nevada. It's accented with pump drilled hand cut spiny oyster tabs that are circa 1940 or earlier in age. Hand rolled natural shell heishi were used as spacers and to finish the necklace. It closes with thick gauged hand wrought stamped sterling Navajo bench bead and traditional silver cones.
All the silver has a warm dark aged patina. A wire wrapped hook and double eye finish the piece. The total wearing length is approximately 33 inches and it weighs 125 grams. So this is a very substantial necklace.
The artist chose large nuggets for their natural earthy beauty. They average 1 to 1.25 inches in length and are approximately 3/8th of an inch thick. The beads have a saturated rich blue color and beautiful webbed matrix that is golden brown with a soft warm polish. They are dense beads and none have broken, even though they are many decades old. Finishing the necklace and spaced between each turquoise nugget are hundreds of hand rolled shell heishi in a pretty shade of cream and dark brown. They measure 3 to 4mm across. 6 tabs of orange spiny oyster accent the necklace. The heishi and spiny oyster tabs were hand cut by a Santo Domingo heishi cutter and a pump drill was used on at least 3 of them, a process seen in very very old beads and used before electric power became available to the artists. These beautiful old tabs measure 5/8th by 7/8th, 1 and 1/8th by 5/8th and. The beads are strung on cotton, a stringing material used at the turn of the century and into the 50's. Later in the century artists substituted fiber cord for the cotton, so the cotton stringing dates this as an earlier piece. The cotton is in excellent condition and suitable for (careful) wear. This is a warm, charming and substantial necklace that will reflect your appreciation for very old Navajo and pueblo jewelry.
