Before Santo Domingo people started using Sterling hardware for their closures, necklaces were made longer in order to fit over the head & made with the'Squaw Wrap. The turquoise is from the of Arizona Kingman mine & have lots of black matrix & is very even, in not only color, but each 2 mm range bead size. From time, It has naturally, twisted itself over the years (See last photo)..
