This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo strand of beads strung with hand cut very old turquoise heishi beads and pure white shell heishi accent beads. Originally strung on cat gut and finished with the 4 silver bench beads and hook and eye clasp. I had the necklace restrung when I added the stunning Fox turquoise pendant.
The patina was left on the bench made silver beads and hook and eye clasp and the beads are strung in the exact order as they were originally. The clasp and bench beads used on the necklace are hand wrought and as old as the 40's to 50's.
The turquoise and shell heishi are much much older, possibly from the 20's or 30's or even earlier... They are entirely natural, not stabilized or enhanced in any way. They have the wonderful irregularities seen in early beads hand cut with primitive tools. There are no missing or damaged beads and the turquoise is a wonderful blend of greens, some blues and golden brown shades.
Quite possibly Cerrillos from New Mexico or green Royston beads from Nevada. The turquoise pendant is from the 60's to 70's and the newest component of the necklace. The Navajo pendant is hand wrought from sterling silver. It features a large high grade natural nugget turquoise stone from the Fox mine in Nevada. The nugget shape is also known as seafoam. It's a beautiful dark green color with a complex dark smoky black scattered matrix. It's entirely natural, not dyed or stabilized or otherwise enhanced, which greatly increases it's value. It's a very hard stone, a sign of great quality, with no exposed or crumbling matrix and a rich very natural appearing polish. I've shown photos in natural light as well as on flash, to show you the beautiful depth and detail of the stone. It's signed by Sue George, part of a well known family of Navajo silversmiths and tested as sterling. The necklace is 20 inches long including the clasp.
The pendant is 2 and 1/8th inches in length and is 1.5 inches across it's widest section. It was left in it's nugget shape with a very high natural dome.Natural seafoam nugget Fox turquoise in this wonderful dark green color is rare and it perfectly enhances the dark greens in the heishi. Heishi beads and the pendant weigh a very substantial 91 grams. Each turquoise heishi bead has a different shape but are approximately the same width... Hand cut and hand rolled with a width of approximately 11mm across. The white shell heishi are a tiny bit smaller, with a width of 10mm. Bench beads silver beads are the same width as the turquoise and make beautiful accents. The clasp is hand formed from silver wire and very sturdy. The pendant has a hand wrought deep smooth straight bezel that tightly hugs the natural shape of the stone. A beautiful twisted rope detail surrounds the turquoise. It's a deliberately simple mounting that draws all of your attention to the high quality stone. A heavy carinated wire frames the pendant, adding strength and protecting the stone. It's been masterfully hand chiseled on it's edge. This is a statement piece with the unmatched beauty of antique heishi hand cut by Santo Domingo bead artists accented with a vintage stunning Navajo pendant of sterling silver and natural Fox turquoise.
