Vintage Zuni Native Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Heishi Owl Fetish Necklace
Item for sale is a three strand Zuni necklace with hand-rolled pen shell heishi beads and hand-carved'Sleeping Beauty' turquoise owl fetish beads. This necklace is in excellent condition with no noted flaws. I believe it is an early Pete and Dinah Gasper piece (circa late 70's - early 80's) who's work often features these unique carved owls in turquoise; however, it is not signed.
The turquoise owl beads have a truly vibrant medium blue color with white/cream matrix, and there are 4 additional turquoise heishi beads within the second pen shell strand - as shown. They are strung on nylon cord with knots secured by heat fusion (melted). The hook and eye findings are sterling.
The bead cones are not sterling, but rather stainless steel. It is an interesting mix of materials in that the turquoise appears to be very high quality, while the closure hook elements are rather humble. The pen shell beads are approx. 1/12 wide x same length, with a fine smooth texture. 10 hand carved owl beads are approximately 1/2" x 3/8" with no chips or cracks.
