This is a listing for a vintage pueblo strand of beads strung with hand cut turquoise and white clam shell heishi. A few sterling silver bench beads accent the piece.
It closes with a traditional and hook and eye clasp. The beads are many decades in age. Old necklaces have to be maintained if they are going to be worn and I had the stringing replaced with bead wire by a Navajo bead artist. The turquoise and white shell heishi beads have been hand cut, drilled, rolled and polished with primitive tools. Their color is a rich blend of medium, light and dark greens, some blues and golden caramel brown with the white shell heishi accents adding brightness. Tiny chips and pitting and a warm surface polish add to their beauty.... A more primitive and aged appearance that can't be reproduced with machine made beads. The strand is 20 inches and it weighs a substantial 65 grams. Each turquoise heishi bead has a different shape and thickness but all of them are approximately the same width of approximately 11mm across. The white shell heishi are a tiny bit smaller, with a width of 10mm. Silver beads are the same width as the turquoise and add a touch of warmth with their unpolished aged patina. The clasp is sturdy and secure. Vintage completely hand made turquoise and shell heishi beads are a beautiful and highly wearable Native American art form.
