This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace. It was made in the 60's or 70's and features 3 strands of stunning turquoise hand cut heishi from the Sleeping beauty mine, spaced with tan and cream shell heishi.
It closes with sterling silver cones and a traditional hook and eye clasp. The necklace is long enough to slip over your head when closed, at 31 inches. But it's nice to be able to open it for a wide bailed pendant or jacla. But there are 3 long strands with hundreds of beads, which gives the necklace a look of substance and luxury.
It weighs 59 grams, which is a lot of for 2 and 5 mm beads. The turquoise is wonderful in a solid bright and rich blue without matrix. Taken from the Sleeping Beauty mine at least 5 decades ago when it was still producing that solid Persian blue color. The beads have a strong polish which reflects their hardness and the shell heishi add the perfect tone of neutrality that brings the piece together. This is a necklace that can be worn casually, if desired, but it will always be an elegant and highly sophisticated necklace that can be worn proudly with your very best black dress. It's a killer accent piece or blends perfectly with your jeans and white blouse. The amount of work that goes into cutting the turquoise, shaping it, drilling it, rolling and polishing it, then stringing it into a 3 stranded pieces with all those tiny tiny spacers, is hard to imagine. It's time intensive and requires great skill and patience with the goal being understated beauty. It's a standard that not too many artists can achieve.
