This is a listing for a vintage, circa mid -century.. 1940's to 50's Santo Domingo necklace.
It's an elegant strand of turquoise nuggets from the Kingman mine separated by beautiful hand cut shell heishi. It's in excellent vintage condition with it's original cord stringing that remains strong and secure and a beautiful wrapped finish around the necklace. The necklace is notable for it's wonderful age acquired softness and flexibility, it's excellent condition and it's obvious hand made charm and quality. It has a 16 inch drop, so is approximately 32 inches in total length. It weighs 43 grams which is nice and sturdy for a single strand of smaller nuggets and shell heishi. The bead size has a very subtle and graceful graduation. The nuggets in the center are as large as 18mm in length and the nuggets next to the wrap are 8 or 9mm in length. Each nugget is slightly different which is a nice contrast with the heishi, which are all the same 4.5mm size. All the heishi were hand cut, drilled and polished. The shell is cream colored with an aged darkened patina and the turquoise is deep teal blue... Classic Kingman nuggets with a great polish that reflects their hardness.
All the beads have larger drill holes than found in modern heishi and beads, an element of older beads. Every collection of vintage Native American jewelry should have a very old strand of shell and turquoise nuggets. It adds instant elegance and charm to your jeans or your little black dress... Definitely a classy "go to" piece of jewelry. The item "Vintage Turquoise Nugget Shell Heishi Santo Domingo Squaw Wrap Necklace" is in sale since Thursday, December 6, 2018.
