This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace. I've collected vintage Santo Domingo heishi necklaces for a long time and I've been lucky enough to come across a few of these... 3 to be exact and I've seen about 2 more that were not for sale. I bought them if I could and passed them on to my customers. This is the last one in my collection.
The total wearing length of the necklace is 31.25 inches, so quite long. And it weighs 129 grams, which is substantial.I wish I knew the artist, as I feel that they were all made by the same person or couple. They are always the same style...
3 long strands of the most gorgeous orange lipped spiny oyster beads. The heishi beads are generous in size and cut into a free formed rondel with a soft organic shape. They are spaced with very geometric perfectly cut tubular heishi... Also hand cut, drilled, ground and polished.
The alternating sizes and shapes enhance each other... Drawing attention to their different (and perfect) cuts, and creating a necklace that flows with texture. By using beads and spacers cut from the same shell the designer created a stunning display of orange lipped spiny oyster, with no need for silver or other stone accents.
The shell is sometimes confused with pink coral or melon shell. It's underside is a creamy very pale orange that shades to a rich saturated orange on the top side. The colors are luminous and the shell has a glossy warm polish. The largest near the center measure approximately 9mm across.Near the top they measures 3mm across. The smaller shell spacers all measure approximately 2.5mm across. All the beads, being hand cut, will show slight differences in length or thickness, but they are cut to have the same width, which gives the necklace an even flow and beautiful fluid drape.
It's strung on fiber cord which is in excellent condition, very strong. The 3 strands are finished with silver cones and wire wrapped to a hook and eye clasp.
