This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace. It displays a stunning collection of hand cut, rolled and polished turquoise heishi accented with 14 large hand carved turquoise fetish birds. The turquoise is from Arizona...Probably Kingman, in a rich teal bluish green shade. Photos were taken with natural light and flash to show more detail.
There are no damaged or missing beads and the original stringing is very strong and secure. The stringing is done on sturdy fiber cord. This is a substantial piece that weighs 113 grams and is 33.5 inches in length.
The strand is finished with a sterling bench bead and cone and closes with a traditional hook and eye clasp. The silver has acquired a dark aged patina.
The bird fetishes are done by a master carver with a streamlined chunky three dimensional shape and details engraved on the wings and face of the birds. All the tail feathers were given a straight edged finish which is beautiful and also stronger. The largest bird is 2.25 inches in length, which is very large for a necklace fetish.
It's 9/16th of an inch across it's mid section and 3/8th of an inch thick. The smallest bird is only 1 and 7/8th inches in length... Still a very large fetish for a necklace. The graduation is subtle and expertly done. This necklace is authentic and rare.It can stand on it's own, dressed up or casual, as needed. It's a true statement piece. Or stack it with any of your beautiful beads. It's versatile, valuable and extremely wearable.
