This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace. The turquoise is high grade material from the Kingman mine in Arizona. This is a 3 strand necklace with the longest strand measuring 21 inches, the middle strand measuring 19.5 inches and the shortest strand measuring 19 inches. The turquoise heishi are perfectly graduated with the smallest beads close to the clasp measuring approximately 2mm across and the largest heishi, including the orange spiny oyster 7mm across. It closes with bench made sterling beads and a traditional hook and eye clasp. All the beads have been hand rolled by a master heishi maker. The process involves slicing the stone into strips, hand chipping it into squares, drilling the pieces so they can be strung on wire, then sanding or grinding the pieces (called "rolling") into a round heishi shaped bead.
At this point the beads are graduated, as you need a more narrow bead near the clasp, for comfort. After the beads are shaped, they are cleaned then polished, using wax or leather, and finally strung.
These beads are strung on flexible and strong fiber cord. This is a process that takes many weeks for a single necklace.
This piece is notable for it's fine hand crafted quality and the beauty of the American mined turquoise.
