This is a listing for a vintage necklace made by a Santo Domingo bead artist. I acquired it several years ago as new old stock the from stored inventory of a Native American gallery which closed in the late 80's. The beads are entirely hand cut, drilled, rolled and polished, then beautifully strung. The quality of the bead cutting is extremely good. The turquoise is from the Kingman mine, from an era when very very good material was still being mined and made into jewelry.
There are 3 strands that stack, with the longest being approximately 21 inches, the middle 20 inches and the shortest 19 inches. The necklace when held has a luxurious dense feel to the beads and it weighs a substantial 61 grams. The center of each strand is accented with heishi cut from orange lipped spiny oyster.
The turquoise heishi graduate from the largest at 7mm to the smallest at 4mm. The graduation is flawless, done entirely "by sight" and not the use of tools. Lovely sterling beads that measure 7 mm across and a sturdy hook and eye finish the piece. The turquoise is rich saturated teal blue... A true blend of blue and green together.
A few are paler blue. The matrix is scattered in colors that range from golden brown to dark, almost black, brown. Some of the beads have beautiful pyrite inclusions.
All of the beads took an excellent polish. The shell heishi is pale pale orange with dark orange edges.... Beautiful accent to the turquoise.
The artist starts by cutting the turquoise stone into strips, then into small squares, each square becoming a heishi bead which is then drilled, strung on wire, ground into the desired shape and size, then polished. At that point over 60% of the turquoise is lost. It's a time consuming process and requires great skill and patience. Some of the beads will show a tiny nick....
Proof that they were hand rolled by an artist... A delight to own and wear.
