This is a listing for a turquoise heishi necklace with matching jacla pendant/earrings. The beads were hand cut and strung in the 60's or possibly earlier.
The hook and eye clasp are hand formed from silver wire, an indication this could be an older strand of beads. They were hand cut, rolled and polished and strung on waxed cord. The stringing is original and in excellent condition. One of the silver cones is crimped which I think was done at the time of stringing, somewhat like a cinch bead, to hold the string tightly. The turquoise is from the Kingman mine and very beautiful. The jacla heishi are smaller in scale but obviously cut from the same turquoise and match the necklace perfectly... Which isn't always the case. They are also strung on waxed cord and knotted securely. They could easily be strung onto a pair of silver hooks if one wanted to use them as earrings.
Photos are enlarged for detail and all were taken inside with natural light except for 3 and 5, which I took with flash. They are also enlarged, so I've included a coin (quarter) for size comparison.
The necklace is 22.5 inches in length and the jacla is 3 inches in length. The beads do graduate and it is very slight... Very subtle, not obvious, with the largest bead in the center of the the necklace measuring 7mm across and the smaller beads next to the cones measuring 5mm. That's a 2mm graduation over 20 inches of turquoise, so very gradual and expertly strung.
The Santo Domingo bead artists don't use calipers to string their heishi. It's done by eye. The same is true of the heishi on the jacla. The largest in the center is only 3mm across and next the top bead is only 2mm across. The white round shell beads are 5mm across. The necklace weighs 35 grams, including the jacla. The turquoise is vivid blue, seen in the best Kingman with undertones of green and a black scattered matrix. High grade Kingman has a warmth and vibrance that is stunning in a strand of heishi, whether you are wearing it casually with faded jeans and white t-shirt or as a single striking accent with a little black dress.
