This is a listing for a vintage, circa 1970's three strand jet heishi necklace. Jet stone is millions of years old formed from petrified trees. There are different types, depending on where it formed. The Navajo and pueblo Native Americans from New Mexico have been forming jet into jewelry since the 1500's. Jet is mined in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico, so is very much a native stone of the west.
I don't see a lot of multi-strand jet heishi necklaces. These strands were beautifully accented with turquoise heishi and all the beads are hand cut and rolled. The necklace is an estate piece from a collection of vintage Native American jewelry and was estimated to be from the 70's, but could be older. The beads are strung on monofilament beading material and all the stringing and components are original and in mint condition.
The cones are silver with a simple stamped pattern on them and untested, so could be sterling or silver plate. The wire wrapped finish and the hook and eye clasp are base metal and also in excellent condition, ready to wear and very secure.
Many of these vintage pieces were strung on fishing line and finished with plated silver or base metal findings, as they are very strong and functional. All the focus would have been on the beautiful bead work. The monofilament stringing material is highly flexible, very fluid, with a nice drape. The necklace is extra long at 28 inches, so can easily slip over the head when closed, but can be unclasped to slip on a pendant, if desired. All 3 strands are the same length which gives the necklace a nice display of beautiful jet beads. The heishi are hand cut and each one shows slight differences, but they average 2.5mm in diameter and length, so are small in size.
The turquoise accent beads have the same width but are longer in size, which works beautifully as an accent. Jet stone is extremely lightweight and the entire necklace weighs only 17 grams, so is extremely comfortable and a nice find for anyone who requires a lightweight necklace.
The basic black color of the jet heishi makes a stunning background for the bright blue heishi. The rarity of the handmade jet beads and the appeal of it's simple design makes the necklace an easy piece to wear with everything. Dress it up or down, easily, as needed.
