There are 7 strands of natural coral, which represents a tremendous amount of work. Each piece of coral would have been clipped into a cube shape, then drilled and strung on wire. The beads are then ground and polished into a tubular heishi shape then polished by hand using leather for a warm beautiful finish. All that before it's strung into a necklace. The artist accented this piece with a sprinkling of various shaped turquoise and jet beads, adding contrast and interest to the large mass of coral beads.
The coral is a rich saturated dark salmon orange in color, not dyed or enhanced in any way, and is spaced with light tan shell heishi which also finish the necklace before being wrapped. The total drop is 16.5 inches for a wearing length of 33 inches and it has a very sturdy feel and weight of 84 grams. Each coral bead is 8mm in length and 3mm in thickness (see photo of penny for size comparison). The turquoise and jet beads have a nugget, round and disk shape, which adds a geometric and colorful accent to the necklace.
