This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo necklace strung with hand cut nugget heishi beads. A vintage Zuni inlay rainbow man pendant featuring the same Blue Gem turquoise that is in the necklace has been attached at some point. It weighs a substantial 74 grams and has a 14 inch drop, not including the pendant. So the beaded section is approximately 28 inches and slips over the head with a wrapped finish.I bought the necklace with the pendant attached and because it is such a beautiful match, have always kept them together. All components are in excellent condition with no damage. An aged matrix fissure has formed on one piece of turquoise in the pendant. It's not a crack or damage...
Just a sign of aging that can occur in the matrix of natural turquoise that has not been stabilized. The stone is extremely secure and tight in it's setting. The turquoise beads are rare in that the nuggets were hand cut and given a flat polish on both the top and bottom surface while the sides were left in their natural organic nugget shape, rather than polished in a tube.
It's an unusual and very beautiful treatment of the beads and it adds a rustic and organic appeal to the necklace. Beads are usually entirely cut and polished or left entirely as nuggets. So this treatment is both and it gives the necklace a look that is refined and rustic at the same time. The turquoise is from the Blue Gem mine and extremely hard which is reflected in the strong polish. The beads are not graduated except towards the very finish near the wrapped closure. They average 12 mm across and 5mm deep and each is separated by 1 or 2 tube shaped turquoise heishi.
At one spot there are 2 nuggets together. They are just strung that way. There are no missing beads and no gaps in the stringing. The stringing is on cord, beautifully wrapped and is original to the necklace and very strong. The turquoise is that amazing dark rich teal green that is seen with Blue Gem stone. Golden brown matrix, characteristic of Blue Gem material, is scattered throughout.
It's a perfect match to the turquoise seen in the pendant. The pendant started out as a pin and measures 2 and 3/8th of an inch across if the rainbow man is lying sideways, which is how the pin and clasp were placed.
It's 1.25 inches across it's widest section. So this is a fairly large size for a vintage rainbow man pin. Many of them are half this size. And at some point in it's history, a tiny round bail was soldered to the kachina's top hat and it became a pendant.
The pin was wisely left on so that it could always be used as such, if desired. The rainbow man kachina is a lovely combination of dark orange spiny oyster, pale orange lipped shell, white mother of pearl, black jet and rich teal Blue Gem turquoise. All the stones are natural and not stabilized. And all were masterfully cut and set stone to stone without the use of silver channels. That requires tremendous skill when done perfectly, as this was.All the stones are set in a deep tight bezel and the work of art is finished with tiny stamped concho accents. This is a wonderful necklace of understated beauty for the collector of fine quality Native American beads and silver work.
