This is a listing for a vintage, circa 1970's Santo Domingo necklace. It features 11 strands of tan shell heishi accented strongly with dark green turquoise heishi. The green turquoise could quite possibly be from the Royston, the Fox or the Cerrillos mine. The dark green beads are arranged beautifully with large solid sections of green color in the center of the necklace and a scattered arrangement of green heishi throughout the tan shell. It's has a soothing sense of understated beauty with it's rich earth tones.
I've never seen another necklace like it. Eleven strands is luxurious for any type of bead and the weight of the necklace reflects that at 114 grams. It closes with large sterling silver cones and a wire wrapped traditional hook and eye clasp finishes the piece.
At 28 inches it can easily slip over the head without opening the clasp. But being able to open the necklace will allow you to hang a large bailed pendant or perhaps your favorite jacla. All of the beads are hand made and very small at 2mm in width. The shell heishi are only 1 or 2mm in length and the green turquoise heishi are a little longer at 3mm.There are hundreds of beads, representing an enormous investment in time, energy and skill. A wonderful piece for the collector of rare and beautiful heishi necklaces.
