Vintage Navajo Mediterranean Coral Turquoise Heishi Necklace by Audie Yazzie
This is a listing for a vintage Navajo necklace. It was strung by the Navajo artist Audie Yazzie.

It is however, a vintage piece. Yazzie contacted me and told me personally that he strung this necklace in the mid-80's. This is new old stock.

There are 6 strands of beads that finish with long sterling cones and a single small silver bead, all wire wrapped with a traditional hook and eye finish. These 2 tiny silver accent beads are beautiful, with an intricate deeply stamped surface, done perfectly. Though small, they stand out, and you will find them on his older vintage necklaces. In addition this necklace is finished with an often used signature of his...

A single carved bird fetish, standing alone among hundreds of beads. The necklace is 28.24 inches in length, not including the sterling extension chain which adds another 4 inches. He favors long statement pieces.

It weighs an impressive 107 grams. The coral heishi average 3 by 3 mm in size throughout the necklace. The corals right before the clasp will thin out a tiny bit so they can fit underneath the silver cones.

The turquoise heishi are larger than the coral, in various widths ranging from 4 to 7mm. This variation when done by a beading master will add texture and beauty to the necklace, for a rich display of beads.

Every bead on this necklace has been carefully hand cut, drilled, ground into shape and polished to a beautiful sheen by a Santo Domingo heishi carver. The skill and patience required to do this is intense. The necklace is strung on very fine and very strong cord fiber and has a remarkable fluid and flexible drape. The coral is that rare dark saturated tomato red color known as oxblood. Not the artificial red of dyed bamboo coral.

With a scattered dark brown and charcoal matrix, quite possibly from the Morenci mine. Yazzie obviously recognizes and has collected superb gem grade beads and his love and appreciation of beautiful stone, along with his artistic ability to arrange them has resulted in museum worthy necklaces found in the very best collections of Native American art. This piece is very reasonably priced for a Yazzie piece and is a nice opportunity to add one of his necklaces to your own collection. It will arrive first class with signature confirmation.
