It was strung by a Navajo using turquoise heishi hand carved by a Santo Domingo artist. The turquoise is green with brown matrix from the Royston mine and is natural. The artist finished the necklace with cast silver fancy beads that are accented with light green natural turquoise cabochons and finished the necklace with hand wrought sterling silver Navajo bench beads.
It closes with a traditional hook and eye. The necklace is in excellent vintage condition with no damage and a warm aged patina on the silver bench beads, which I have left. None of the heishi is broken or missing. Natural turquoise used for making heishi has to be very strong in order not to break.
The necklace measures 24.25 inches and weighs 51 grams. The heishi is all the same size...
The beads do not graduate, and they measure 7 mm across. The Navajo sterling bench beads do graduate, with a series of 3 beads that measure 13, 20 and 27mm in length. More Navajo bench made beads, round in shape, accent the necklace.Cast metal is very hard and doesn't damage. The beads and their turquoise accents have a warm aged patina that greatly adds to the beauty of the necklace. The round turquoise cabochon in the center of each bead is 9mm across, high grade and natural and blends perfectly with the Royston heishi.
With an ovoid shape that measures 24mm in length. Both the front and the back of the bead are mounted with turquoise. The colors of this piece are muted and soft and perfect for the person who loves the earth tones of green Royston.
