Huge Vintage Kewa (Santo Domingo) Royston Turquoise Heishi Bead Necklace. This beautiful necklace is from the Kewa Pueblo formerly known as the Santo Domingo Pueblo. Kewa artists are known for their stonework jewelry, including flat disks or beads called heishi, meaning "shell bead" in Eastern Keresan, which are often made into necklaces. The Kewa Pueblo is one of the eight Northern New Mexico pueblos and the Kewa are Navajo.
This Necklace is a six strand turquoise graduated heishe bead necklace with a total length of 35 inches and the length when fastened is 17 1/2 inches. The small clasp is sterling silver Total weight is approximately 300 Grams Genuine Turquoise heishe beads, that graduate in width from approximately 6mm to 15mm.
The corn rows at the end of each strand are approximately 20mm on the shortest strand to 26mm on the longest. The solid stones anchoring the necklace at the top of the strands are 19 mm at the narrowest point and 30mm at the widest with a length of 50mm (almost 2). The Royston Turquoise is a gorgeous vivid turquoise with splashes of brown and black.The last time I saw this necklace was at the Cattle Baron's Ball in Dallas, Texas.
