This is a listing for a vintage mid-century Santo Domingo necklace. Vintage to antique shell heishi beads are in excellent condition with no damaged or missing beads. They are entirely hand rolled with a rustic larger size and aged darkened patina consistent with many decades of life. A beautiful hand formed earthy quality seen with hand cut, drilled, ground and polished beads is readily apparent. They have a toasted coconut shade...
Creamy beige with tan edges. These heishi beads are easily early century in age and older than the polished nuggets of turquoise they have been accented with. The turquoise beads have a dark blue shade seen with Blue Gem turquoise. The polish is strong and reflects the density of the turquoise.
They have also acquired a rich aged patina. Their drilling appears to be done with power, circa early 1960's, and I would assume that is when the necklace was made. I don't consider the turquoise to be the main focus here. Rather it's a wonderful example of an early shell heishi necklace and the turquoise is a perfect accent bead. The shell heishi are not graduated..They are all the same 5mm size except for a few beads near the finish which taper slightly at the top where they are knotted, making the necklace tie and hang with comfort. The turquoise nuggets are thin... A "chip" style and measure 10 to 12mm in length. The unwaxed cord is knotted at the top then wrapped. Unwaxed beading material is typical in your much earlier necklaces. A wrapped finish is an elegant design that easily slips over the head. The stringing is strong but has also achieved the softness and flexibility that comes with age which gives it a wonderful fluid drape. If I can leave the original stringing on a necklace knowing it's secure for wear, I will.
It tells the story of it's age. But the wearer has to keep in mind that the stringing is probably at least 60 years old and handle and store it carefully. The beaded section has a drop of 12.5 inches, so a total display length of 25 inches.
And the drop of the wrap is 3.25 inches so adds another 6.5 inches to the total wearing length length which would be over 31 inches. This can definitely be considered a longer necklace. It weighs a very sturdy 44 grams. This is a wonderful example of early shell heishi. Dress it up or wear it casually as a single impressive piece or layered with your other shell and turquoise beads. It will arrive first class with tracking.
