This is a listing for a vintage, circa 1940's to 50's Santo Domingo necklace. It is entirely original, has not been restrung and is in excellent condition. No clasp involved, it just slips over the neck with a 14 inch drop, so is approximately 28 inches in length. It's strung with hand cut, drilled and polished natural turquoise nuggets spaced and finished off with shell heishi. The turquoise beads are chunky and have been shaped into a free form cube with polished edges.
It gives each bead a softened faceted contour and reflects a much earlier created necklace. The beads are medium solid green that has darkened with age and they have a slight amount of golden brown matrix, high grade with a natural warmth and beautiful polish.
Possibly from the Kingman mine. There are no missing or broken beads and the condition is excellent. The shell heishi, all hand made, are a pretty shade of tan and a few of the beads around the neck are a transparent white color. I've taken a photo with the largest bead next to a nickel for size reference. The turquoise beads graduate in size and the largest central bead measures 22 mm in length and is 13mm wide and approximately 8mm thick. Each bead is carved differently but they all have a beautiful organic form and these early Santo Domingo pieces are greatly prized for their simple beauty.
