Old Santo Domingo Morenci Turquoise Heishi Spiny Shell Necklace
This is a listing for a vintage circa mid century necklace made by a Santo Domingo bead artist. The beads are entirely hand cut, drilled, rolled and polished. The quality of the bead cutting is extremely good. The turquoise is from the Morenci mine, approximately 70 years old, when very very good natural material was still being mined and made into jewelry.

I don't see any signs of stabilization on these beads and if they were hardened, if was extremely well done. They display the irregular surface character of natural turquoise and matrix along with a well worn aged patina and the tool marks used in hand carved beads. The turquoise is a rich saturated blue with a dark and golden brown matrix scattered with iron pyrite. The original stringing was done on cord with a short 3 inch wrapped finish.

It broke, due to it's old age and use. The beads were restrung in their original configuration on strong bead wire, with a pleasing drape. The wrapped finish was replaced with a hand wrought Navajo sterling hook and eye.

It's a single strand of beads that is approximately 27 inches in length and can slip over the head if you want to leave the clasp connected or opened if you want to add your favorite jacla. It weighs 47 grams, a sturdy weight for a single strand of turquoise.

The turquoise heishi graduate from the largest at 10mm to the smallest at 4mm. The graduation is flawless with a 6mm variation in size spread out over the entire length of beads and strung entirely "by sight" without the use of measuring tools. The spiny oyster corn shaped pendant beads are dark orange and creamy white, adding more warmth to the turquoise. Shell is a favored beading material used often by the Santo Domingo artists. They measure 15mm to 22mm in length... The process of making heishi is a difficult art that requires great skill and patience. The artist starts by cutting the turquoise stone into strips, then into small squares, each square becoming a heishi bead which is then drilled, strung on wire, ground into the desired shape and size, then polished by hand with leather.
