This is a listing for a vintage necklace made by a Santo Domingo bead artist. The beads are entirely hand cut, drilled, rolled, polished and strung. The quality of the bead cutting is extremely good. The turquoise is from the Kingman mine, approximately 40 years ago, when very very good material was still being mined and made into jewelry. It's a single strand of beads that slips over the head with a wrapped cord finish. The wrapping is in excellent condition, made from strong cotton cord. The stringing of the beads has stretched a little, a normal occurrence with age and wear. It remains secure with a wonderful soft drape acquired with age and use. The drop, not including the spiny oyster corn shaped beads, is 14 inches for a wearing length of approximately 28 inches. It weighs 50 grams, a sturdy weight for a single strand of turquoise. The turquoise heishi graduate from the largest at 10mm to the smallest at 4mm. The graduation is flawless with a 6mm variation in size spread out over 28 inches, done entirely "by sight" and not the use of tools. There are 2 single round silver beads that terminate the strand. They have darkened with age, which I have left. It's a simple accent that compliments the simplicity and beauty of the necklace. The turquoise is rich saturated teal blue... A little more blue than green, but definitely that rich classic teal blue color you see in high grade Kingman. The matrix is a scattered blend of browns, dark gray and some opaque crystal.
Some of the heishi are solid blue and some are lighter blue. Together they form a gorgeous display of vintage Arizona turquoise. The spiny oyster beads are dark orange and create a wonderful contrast with the dark teal. They measure 15mm to 22mm in length...
The process of making heishi is a difficult art that requires great skill and patience. The artist starts by cutting the turquoise stone into strips, then into small squares, each square becoming a heishi bead which is then drilled, strung on wire, ground into the desired shape and size, then polished. This beautiful entirely hand made necklace will arrive first class with tracking.
