Taking home this years 1st place prize ribbon for "BEST IN CLASS" & beating out all others at Santa Fe's Indian Market 2018 didn't surprise me! Entering for the 1st time under his own name was one of Farrell's luckiest moves & the Indian Market judges saw for themselves, the same thing I've been seeing & that is, that this husband & wife duo aren't just your average artists, but the work they do that separated them from all others! (See award in last photo).
Santo DomingoKeWa Pueblo artisans Reyes & her husband Farrell have worked side by side, starting out under the direction of Reyes's award winning uncle Martine Lovato. Martine is a master artist & one of the best the Pueblo offers. He chose this particular niece out of many he has, teaching both Reyes & Farrell the do's & don'ts & the beauty of making both'perfect' mosaic jewelry, as well as cutting perfectly cut heishi beads. The time & dedication paid off & just like Martine, you are getting nothing less than the best.
Only difference, is the name. Reyes is the niece of the well known "Lupe Lovato" (who is Matine's brother) who is also the Chief for the whole Pueblo.
I couldn't feel more proud to work closely with them & call them my personal friends. Everything that they use, is literally done by hand & is cut by "Eye & Feel", using no calipers for measuring! Their work will win you over, especially seeing up close, how precise & perfect they get it! But it's not just that everything is done by hand that you will be amazed by, but it's those little finishing touches that take time to do, in order to produce the finest you'll get! Reyas does the mosaic & inlay, while Farrell does the cutting & is the'finisher.
The necklace is made of olive shell & has an amazing 10 mm precision & narrows down to a 5.3 mm at the closure. The heishi has a varied thickness, but is precise in the diameter. Starting from the whole rock, the green turquoise beads are made by the hands of Farrell & are hand rolled into round beads, while giving them a slight facet. Inside the bale is a bead of blue Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The large bale is made of Nevada green turquoise, that is cut by hand & then like a puzzle, each chip is laid in a mosaic inlay..
The sides are channel mosaic set & on the mosaic center, Farrell placed cuts of Spiny Oyster shell, that tend to give it a more modern appeal. The mosaic pendant is non removable & has a very abstract look to it. It is designed with cuts of Spiny Oyster, both blue & green turquoise & for a shimmery look, Mother of Pearl.. There is a round cabochon &. Of Spiny Oyster that sit atop, along with a triangular cut of MOP for a more modern look.
The mosaic sits atop of a golden Mother of Pearl backing & if you zoom in on photo 9, you will see 2 small Italian Coral beads to cover the string that connects the bale to the pendant. With these artists, you will not see any loose ends.. it's all about the producing the cleanest work with ultimate quality! It doesn't get any better than this! This is Pueblo Jewelry at it's FINEST!
