I remember years ago, where for the 1st time I came across a Mary Tafoya piece in one of the Museums here in Santa Fe.. All I remember was her work literally stopped me in my tracks & in all the years in this business, she stood out like nothing I had never seen before & left me drooling at the museums window! It's not only for the fact that she has her own'signature look', but because her pieces have a'happy, & very whimsical" look to them & being a Folk Art lover myself, that drew me in even more for their heavy "Folk Art feel..

Mary's jewelry has a contemporary Santa Domingo appearance, but at the same time, maintaining "Old School/Traditional" techniques. She comes from ancestry that passed the art of mosaic down to their children & is also the sister to another very dear friend of mine, "JOLENE BIRD".. Her mother & father did the old Santo Domingo "Thunderbird" necklaces that they would mosaic onto Battery Casings & LP albums. Her work is ultra colorful, unique & has a positive feel in all she makes & will not sit down to create, unless her mind, heart, spirit, hands are in all in sync. You can find Mary's jewelry in many prestigious Museums like the Smithsonian, the Heard Museum & galleries internationally.. Her work is unlike any other Ke-Wa artist & "Owns" her style! Abstract & whimsical, this can only be created with a artists imagination! The way she see's her subject before it's creation & knowing what shapes of cuts it takes to make it, has to be the most impressive! The total necklace was made with the help of her family, where Mary cut each and every stone & shell & then mosaic inlaid each appropriately in all the right spots, atop of a black jet backing, that developed into being a abstract & very whimsical looking Pharaoh', with headdress & all! In the belly, Mary used the curved shapes from her "signature" Conus shell, that you see quite frequently in most of her pieces. The Kingman turquoise heishi is totally hand cut Not bought & restrung like many do!! & then rounded off into round disks by her husband Lorenzo & then who hand drilled each & every hole for their daughter, then to string it for the necklace!

Lorenzo did a fine job at making a perfect graduation, where the heishi goes from being as big as 8 mm, all the way down to a super tiny 2 mm!! A sterling hook & eye act as the closure. This can be worn with just about any kind of clothing neckline! You can't go wrong with anything you get of Mary's, as well as a guarantee that NO ONE will have your piece, since no 2 are alike!!!

This can pair with anything of Mary's. METAL: Sterling Silver Hook & Eye.

Shell:Conus (Swirls in belly). TECHNIQUES: Slicing Stone & shell from whole, cutting material, Drilling, Stone mosaic, hand cut heishi(Time Consuming)Stringing. HALLMARKS: M L TAFOYA (with Butterfly). BECAUSE THIS IS MADE WITH HUMAN HANDS & NOT COMMERCIAL MANUFACTURING MACHINES, THERE MAY BE SLIGHT VARIATIONS. Please take out a measuring tape & use it against my given measurements.
