Heishi are small disc- or tube-shaped beads made of organic shells or ground and polished stones.They come from the Kewa Pueblo people (formerly Santo Domingo Pueblo) of New Mexico, before the use of metals in jewelry by that people. The beads are hand-chipped, with holes drilled through their centers using pointed stones. The oldest specimens of heishi date back to around 6000 BCE. Pre 1950's Navajo silversmith's would make jewelry out of US 90% Silver coins. They would use Half Dollars, Quarters, & Mercury Dimes.

Whole Coin jewelry was worn around the reservation as a status symbol of wealth. 800 silver, also called Coin Silver, is made out of silver coins used in European countries pre-1940.During this time period, it was easier for jeweler and silversmiths to use coins that were already guaranteed at a certain purity, than using another form of silver and having to guess at the purity level.
