1940's Santo Domingo Carico Lake Turquoise Spiny Oyster Coral Heishi Necklace

This is a listing for a vintage, near antique, Santo Domingo necklace strung in the 1940's. It's in it's original configuration and has had excellent wear and storage with no damage to the cotton stringing or the natural turquoise, spiny oyster and coral beads. The drop is 15 inches for an approximate total length of 30 inches. And it weighs a substantial 89 grams. I've taken photos next to a quarter for size comparison of the beads.

It's strung with gorgeous hand cut natural turquoise tab shaped beads from the Carico Lake mine in Nevada. They graduate in size with the largest 25 by 32 mm in size and the smaller tabs at the top measuring 15 by 21 mm. There are 18 irregular tab cut beads carved from turquoise.

Two beads were cut from orange spiny oyster and the larger one measures 14 by 22mm. The turquoise is separated with hand cut off white shell heishi accented with 4 exquisite hand cut, drilled and polished coral heishi beads that are an impressive 12mm in length. There are also hand rolled turquoise heishi beads scattered throughout that add more color and balance the pattern.

The turquoise is natural high grade stone from the Carico Lake mine in a bright medium green color and the bird's eye matrix that is a beautiful quality of Carico Lake turquoise. The host rock is white and there is some exposed white matrix on the surface of some of the beads which is seen in untreated non-stabilized turquoise. It's rare to find completely untreated turquoise and if you can find it, it will be in these old necklaces that are about 80 years old. The stones are hard and took a strong polish and there are no broken or missing beads.

Both the spiny oyster tabs and the coral heishi have a rich dark orange color. The coral is from the mediterranean and high quality, as well. All the shell heishi are obviously hand cut, drilled and rolled. The entire arrangement has a beautiful rich organic nature with the rustic beauty that connoisseurs of very old Santo Domingo pieces delight in.
