During the 1930s when the Depression-era was in full swing, New Mexico Pueblo Indians were severely affected. At Santo Domingo Pueblo (now Kewa Pueblo), the Indians became very resourceful and began producing jewelry from whatever materials they could find.
One particular folk art creation they produced has become a very collectible item. This necklace was made from several found materials.
The heishi beads are made from bone, the black backing probably from automotive battery casing, the red from toothbrush handles or something similar, and the turquoise is genuine. It also has sterling silver bench beads. These necklaces were usually in the squash blossom style, with pendants protruding from the sides and a bird pendant at the bottom, like this one. Approximately 2 5/8" X 1 5/8".Approximately 1 1/8" X 1/2". The bone heishi beads measure approximately 6mm. Total weight is approximately 63 Grams. No stamp, tested to guarantee sterling silver. Comes in a gift box with a complimentary silver polishing cloth! This item is in used condition and will exhibit the expected surface scratches and dings to the silver from normal wear. If you need it sooner rather than later please let us know. All carat weights and dimensions are approximate. We try to be as accurate as possible but all scales have a slightly different result.
