This is a listing for a vintage to antique, circa 1920's to 40's Santo Domingo necklace. It's in excellent vintage condition with only one damaged bead which has had an excellent repair (see last photo). I actually owned this piece several years and didn't notice this repair until I listed the necklace. I always go over each bead with a loupe and even then, it was difficult to tell if this bead had been repaired or not, so it's very well done. Almost all tab necklaces from this time frame will have at least one broken bead, even if stored carefully and seldom worn, due to the fragile nature of a tab shaped bead and the fact that the turquoise is completely natural and not hardened (stabilized). All the beads on this necklace were hand cut, rolled, polished and strung by a Santo Domingo heishi carver to be worn in their ceremonies. The turquoise has acquired a warm beautiful coloration through decades of age. It's original stringing is in excellent condition and the cotton squaw wrapped finish is also beautifully preserved, ready to be slipped over the head and worn. The hanging length of the necklace, not including the length of the large tab beads through the center, is approximately 14.5 inches so has a total wearing length of 29 inches.
The extra large tab beads will add an inch to that drop. There are 2 strands and the necklace weighs 177 grams (approximately 6 ounces). Most of the heishi and tab cut beads have a primitive and large, thick and chunky contour, seen in antique hand cut turquoise beads. They are mixed with elegant thinner cut tabs, adding texture, complexity and a beautiful note of asymmetry to the necklace. Many of the beads have obvious pump drilled bead holes, giving them that authentic quality of very old hand created beads.
The artist strung mostly heishi and the smaller tab cut beads close to the neck for comfort and used the largest tabs for the center. Each turquoise bead is spaced with creamy white hand rolled shell heishi. The largest tab cut bead measures 1 and 3/8th inches long. And the largest turquoise heishi is 10mm across. The shell heishi also vary in size with most approximately 5mm across. Many of the beads have a vivid bright saturated blue color, seen in Blue Gem turquoise, with a distinct scattered rich golden brown matrix. They are mixed with turquoise that displays a mixed range of greens and blues....
Soft teal blue, olive green and dark forest green which is seen in old Cerrillos turquoise. It's a wonderful display of old high grade turquoise cut by a master carver.
